I don’t understand why we have systemd timers.
Yes, they can do more than cron jobs can, but I don’t understand them nevertheless:
Now, an admin must first check all cron jobs, and then check all timers. It’s not like one can forget about cron jobs.
You must create two files for each timer.
Cron is simpler. Either just one line in an existing crontab, or add one filie in a directory. And that file has no fluff, it’s only the script to execute.
As with many things systemd, if Linux was introduced today, from scratch, I agree they’re “nicer” or “cleaner”. But since they come in addition to existing solutions, I keep being drawn to the BSDs and their more Unixy way of life without the urge to change true and tested ways of doing things.
